Nevada System of Higher Education Engages Over 140,000 in Statewide Earthquake Drill During 2024 Great Nevada ShakeOut
The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) successfully engaged more than 140,000students, faculty, and staff across its institutions during the 2024 Great Nevada ShakeOut on October 17, 2024. This highly coordinated drill reinforced earthquake preparedness and demonstrated the effectiveness of NSHE’s emergency response systems, ensuring that campuses are better equipped to handle seismic events.
“Safety is at the core of everything we do, and taking a system-wide approach to something like the Great Nevada ShakeOut helps to ensure our campuses are ready for any situation,” said Chancellor Patricia Charlton. “I’m proud of the way our institutions came together to practice these life-saving procedures. It’s a simple drill, but it could make all the difference in an actual emergency.
NSHE institutions activated their campus-wide emergency notification systems to quickly alert students, staff, and faculty at:
- University of Nevada, Reno (UNR)
- University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV)
- Nevada State University (NSU)
- College of Southern Nevada (CSN)
- Great Basin College (GBC)
- Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC)
- Western Nevada College (WNC)
- Desert Research Institute (DRI)
During the drill, participants practiced the “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” procedure, ensuring they know how to protect themselves in the event of an earthquake.
“Earthquake preparedness is a big part of keeping our campuses safe, especially here in Nevada,” said Amy J. Carvalho Chair of the Board of Regents. “This drill is just one way we’re making sure our students, staff, and faculty are ready to respond in case of an emergency. We’re proud to support this important initiative.”
The Great Nevada ShakeOut is part of a broader international effort to raise awareness and improve earthquake preparedness. NSHE’s participation not only helps prepare its campuses but also contributes to the overall safety of Nevada’s communities.
