A new report presented to the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Board of Regents shows the MGM College Opportunity Program is helping employees across MGM Resorts International earn degrees, strengthen their skills, and advance their careers through online programs offered by NSHE. The findings demonstrate growing statewide impact and reinforce how strong public–private partnerships can expand opportunity for working adults.

Since the program began in 2018, NSHE colleges and universities have awarded 168 degrees and certificates to MGM employees. Graduates reported major gains in leadership, communication, and job-specific skills, and many shared that they would not have been able to pursue college without the flexibility and support the program provides. With between 100 and 150 MGM employees applying each year, demand remains steady across all NSHE colleges and universities.

For many participants, the program has opened doors that once felt out of reach.
Nic DuCharme, Senior Manager of Security Strategy at MGM Resorts, is one year into UNLV’s online MBA program and said the experience has reshaped both his work and his family life.

“The program finally made something possible that felt out of reach for years. With a full-time role in Global Security and five kids at home, I needed an option that let me keep advancing without stepping away from my responsibilities. The flexibility and support have helped me build the strategic and financial skills I need to lead at a higher level, and I am already applying what I learn in real time. It has given me a renewed sense of momentum at work and for my family’s future,” said DuCharme.

MGM Resorts CEO Bill Hornbuckle said the company is proud to support employees who want to grow in their careers while remaining rooted in Nevada’s workforce.

“Education creates opportunity, and we continue to support our employees who want to grow in their careers and gain new skills,” Hornbuckle said. “We are grateful for our partnership with NSHE and proud of the many employees who have reached important milestones through this program.”

To support the growing number of MGM employees applying each year, NSHE has increased the number of online degree programs available across the system. In 2022, NSHE offered 113 online programs. Today, MGM employees can select from 155 online degree and certificate options that are part of the statewide online catalog. Through the College Opportunity Program, MGM covers registration fees, required textbooks, proctoring fees, and graduation costs after financial aid is applied, allowing employees to pursue higher education with little to no out-of-pocket cost.

Board of Regents Chair Byron Brooks said the new findings reflect the strength of the partnership and its impact on the hospitality workforce.

“The MGM College Opportunity program exemplifies the power of collaboration between industry and higher education in Nevada to create meaningful pathways for working adults,” Brooks said. “By investing in flexible, high-quality degree and certification programs, MGM is empowering its employees to build new skills and advance their careers, while NSHE is proud to provide the academic support that helps strengthen Nevada’s workforce and the hospitality industry.”

Chancellor Matt McNair said NSHE remains focused on supporting working adults in every corner of the state.

“We are committed to building programs that meet people where they are and help them move forward,” McNair said. “The success of the MGM College Opportunity Program reflects the work of our campuses, the dedication of MGM employees, and the value of public and private partners coming together with a shared goal.”

The evaluation presented to the Board highlights opportunities to continue strengthening the program, including adding new degree offerings and expanding outreach to MGM employees nationwide.
