NSHE Institutions to Participate in the 2025 Great Nevada ShakeOut

[Las Vegas, NV] – The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) is proud to announce that all NSHE colleges and universities will participate in the annual Great Nevada ShakeOut on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at 10:16 AM. This statewide earthquake drill is part of a broader international effort to promote earthquake readiness and safety.

  • University of Nevada, Las Vegas
  • Nevada State University
  • College of Southern Nevada
  • Great Basin College
  • Truckee Meadows Community College
  • Western Nevada College

Nevada is the third most seismically active state in the United States, making earthquake preparedness crucial for the safety of all NSHE students, faculty, and staff. The ShakeOut drill provides an essential opportunity to practice life-saving actions in the event of an earthquake.

What to Expect During the Drill: At exactly 10:16 AM on October 16, NSHE colleges and universities will broadcast an earthquake alert through their campus-wide emergency communication systems. All participants will be instructed to immediately “Drop, Cover, and Hold On.” DRI will be holding its own drill on Tuesday, October 14, 2025 at 10:14 AM.

How to Participate:

  • DROP to the ground
  • COVER your head and neck (and get under a sturdy desk or table if possible)
  • HOLD ON until the shaking stops
  • ADAPT if needed:
    • 🦯 With a cane: Drop or sit on a chair or bed, cover your head, keep your cane nearby
    • ♿ In a wheelchair: Lock your wheels, bend forward, and cover your head and neck
    • 🚪 No cover available: Move next to an interior wall, crouch down, and protect your head and neck
