NSHE Board of Regents Reelects Chair and Vice Chair for 2024-2025 Term

The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Board of Regents reelected Regent Amy J. Carvalho as Chair and Regent Jeffrey S. Downs as Vice Chair at its June quarterly meeting. Their new terms will start July 1, 2024, and end on June 30, 2025.

Regent Amy J. Carvalho, was elected to serve District 12 on the Board of Regents in November 2018. She is a long-time business owner and is actively involved in community service, including leadership roles in the Boulder City Sunrise Rotary Club. Regent Carvalho has served as Chair of the NSHE Board of Regents since January of this year and is honored to continue to serve in this leadership role. She has previously served on many committees as a Regent, including as Chair of the Business, Finance and Facilities Committee and Chair of the Nevada State President Search Committee in 2021. Regent Carvalho is a proud graduate of the College of Southern Nevada and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology, and received her MBA from WGU.

Regent Jeffrey S. Downs was elected in November 2022 to represent District 11. As an NSHE employee since 2001, he began as a Visiting Lecturer in Mathematics at UNR and became a tenured Community College Professor at WNC. Regent Downs served as an interim vice president for over two years, where he focused much of his attention on student success. He has served twice as Faculty Senate Chair, representing the interests of the faculty to the Board of Regents. He earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from CSU San Bernardino, a master’s degree in applied mathematics from CSU Fullerton, and a Ph.D. in Education from Liberty University.

Regent Carvalho and Regent Downs will continue to guide the Board in its mission to provide high-quality, accessible higher education to students across Nevada, ensuring that NSHE remains at the forefront of educational excellence and innovation.
