NSHE Board of Regents Elects Carvalho and Downs as Officers
The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Board of Regents elected Regent Amy J. Carvalho as Chair and Regent Jeffrey S. Downs as Vice Chair at its quarterly meeting in December. In accordance with the recently revised Bylaws, Regent Carvalho and Regent Downs will serve in their roles for a six-month term from January 1, 2024, to June 30, 2024.
Regent Amy J. Carvalho, elected to represent District 12 on the Board of Regents in November 2018, has been actively engaged in shaping higher education policy and fostering community engagement. Currently serving as the Chair of the Board, Regent Carvalho brings a wealth of experience from her extensive entrepreneurial background, community service involvement, and her dedication to education. A graduate of the College of Southern Nevada and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, she earned a Master of Business Administration from WGU in 2009.
Regent Jeffrey S. Downs, representing District 11 and elected in November 2022, has been chosen as the Vice Chair of the Board. With a tenure at NSHE dating back to 2001, Regent Downs has contributed significantly to the academic landscape, serving as a Visiting Lecturer in Mathematics at UNR and later becoming a tenured Community College Professor at WNC. He has further demonstrated his commitment to education by serving as Faculty Senate Chair, an interim vice president, and pursuing a Ph.D. in Education with a focus on Instructional Design and Technology from Liberty University.
