University Police Services Launches Memorial and Awareness Initiative to Strengthen Campus Connections
University Police Services Southern Command (UPD) is launching a new Memorial and Awareness initiative to strengthen campus connections and spotlight important issues within the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE). This ongoing program is designed to promote unity across the community, using visible symbols of support and healing.
As part of the initiative, UPD officers will wear specially designed patches to spark dialogue and promote awareness about causes such as domestic violence prevention, cancer awareness, and sexual assault awareness. The first in this series, the “UNLV Strong” memorial patch, debuted in December, marking one year since the December 6th shooting. This tribute highlights the strength and unity of NSHE while honoring those lost and those who continue to heal.
“This initiative is a visible reminder of our dedication to fostering awareness and honoring resilience across our NSHE community,” said Arnold Vasquez, Interim Director of University Police Services, Southern Command. “The ‘UNLV Strong’ patch symbolizes both the strength of the UNLV community and our ongoing commitment to standing alongside those we serve during times of challenge and healing.”
“University Police Services continues to demonstrate their commitment to supporting our campus communities through initiatives like this,” said Board Chair Amy J. Carvalho. “The ‘UNLV Strong’ patch reflects NSHE’s shared dedication to fostering safety, healing, and awareness across all of our institutions.”
NSHE Chancellor Patricia Charlton shared her support:
“The Memorial and Awareness initiative reflects the compassion and unity that define NSHE. Through these efforts, University Police Services highlights the power of remembrance and the importance of awareness, ensuring that our campuses remain supportive and connected places for all.”
Future patches in the initiative will focus on additional areas of awareness, reinforcing UPD’s role as a trusted partner in creating safe and inclusive campus environments.
