NSHE Board of Regents Approves Strategic Plan to Guide Nevada’s Higher Education System Through 2031
The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Board of Regents has approved the “Success by Design” strategic plan, setting a path for the future of higher education across Nevada’s eight institutions through 2031. The plan is designed to meet Nevada’s workforce needs, support student success, and improve access to higher education, particularly for underrepresented groups.
“The ‘Success by Design’ plan reflects NSHE’s commitment to strengthening higher education in Nevada, ensuring our institutions are equipped to meet both current and future needs,” said Board Chair Amy J. Carvalho. “This plan focuses on progress toward our goals that is both tangible and measurable, including expanding opportunities for all, supporting students throughout their educational journeys, and positioning Nevada’s higher education system for long-term success.”
Based on workforce projections from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce analyzed through 2031, Nevada is expected to see more than 1.5 million job openings, with 61% requiring higher education credentials. Jobs that demand higher education are anticipated to grow 81% faster than those needing only a high school diploma. NSHE’s institutions are key to meeting this demand, and the ‘Success by Design’ plan provides a framework focused on five priority areas to support workforce readiness.
Key components of the plan include:
- Increasing Access to Higher Education: To make it easier for Nevada students to start and succeed in college, the plan emphasizes simplifying admissions, expanding dual credit options, and improving support for adult learners.
- Improve Student Success: Providing consistent support throughout students’ educational journeys, with a focus on first-year support and advising.
- Closing Institutional Performance Gaps: Each institution will identify and address specific areas where student outcomes can improve, ensuring equitable opportunities for all students.
- Meeting Workforce Needs in Nevada: Aligning programs with the high-demand jobs projected for Nevada, including expanded work-based learning opportunities.
- Increase Solutions Focused Research: Promoting research that benefits Nevada communities while addressing larger issues.
“The ‘Success by Design’ plan centers around supporting Nevada’s students and communities in meaningful ways,” said Chancellor Patricia Charlton. “It’s about expanding access, removing barriers, and creating opportunities for all Nevadans to succeed. This plan reflects our commitment to a higher education system that uplifts and empowers our entire state.”
