One Year of Resilience: Reflecting on December 6

UNLV

Message from Board of Regents Chair Amy J. Carvalho, Vice Chair Jeffrey S. Downs, and Chancellor Patricia Charlton reflecting on a year of healing and progress

As we mark one year since the tragic events of December 6, 2023, at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, we pause to acknowledge the profound impact that day has had on students, faculty, staff, families, first responders, and the broader Nevada System of Higher Education community. We honor the lives lost—dedicated educators who inspired their students and contributed profoundly to our academic community. Their loss has been deeply felt across our campuses, touching not only those who knew them personally but also the many whose lives were enriched by their work and presence.

In the face of this adversity, our community has demonstrated remarkable resilience and unity. On that day, the swift and courageous actions of our campus police officers undoubtedly saved countless lives. Their bravery and professionalism exemplify the dedication of all public safety personnel across NSHE, who work tirelessly to protect and serve our campus communities.

Over the past year, the entire NSHE system has come together to provide support, demonstrating the strength of our collective commitment to one another. We have taken steps to enhance the safety and well-being of everyone who calls our campuses home. These include additional security personnel, training for our officers, the integration of enhanced security measures, and ongoing efforts to improve emergency preparedness. These initiatives reflect our commitment to providing a secure and supportive environment for learning and growth. NSHE will continue to build on these efforts, working with our campus communities and public safety teams to identify new opportunities for improvement and ensure that safety remains a cornerstone of our mission.

The strength of our community lies in our collective resolve. Together, we aim to foster a culture of compassion and resilience that honors those we lost by upholding the values of education, inclusivity, and mutual respect that define our institutions.

As we move forward, let us draw strength from one another and remain dedicated to creating a brighter future. By standing together, we honor the past while looking ahead with hope and determination, ensuring that our shared commitment to growth and understanding continues to guide us.
