NSHE Board of Regents Honors Regent Emeritus Jason Geddes with Distinguished Nevadan Award, Posthumously, and Names Rising Researcher Award in His Honor

The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Board of Regents unanimously voted to posthumously grant the Distinguished Nevadan Award to Regent Emeritus Jason Geddes, in recognition of his exceptional contributions to higher education in the state of Nevada. Additionally, the Board approved the naming of the Regents’ Rising Researcher Award after Jason Geddes, in honor of his dedication to mentoring young students and rising researchers across NSHE.

Regent Geddes, who passed away in January 2024, served as a distinguished member of the Board of Regents from 2006 to 2022. His dedication to advancing higher education and his steadfast commitment to serving the students and citizens of Nevada have left an enduring impact on the state’s academic landscape.

A proud alumnus of the University of Nevada, Reno, Regent Geddes earned both his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and his Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Sciences and Health from the institution. Throughout his academic journey, he demonstrated outstanding leadership as a member of the Associated Students of the University of Nevada and received numerous accolades, including the Board of Regents Outstanding Student Award and the University of Nevada, Reno Outstanding Young Alumni Award.

Regent Geddes’ tenure on the Board of Regents was marked by his exemplary leadership, serving three terms as Chairman and five terms as Vice Chairman. He played a pivotal role in shaping academic policies that promoted student access and success, including those related to transfer and articulation, as well as corequisite instruction. His advocacy was instrumental in the establishment of Nevada’s first state-supported, need-based financial aid program, the Silver State Opportunity Grant, furthering access to higher education for countless students across the state.

In addition to his contributions within NSHE, Regent Geddes was appointed by Governor Steve Sisolak to serve on the Education Commission of the States for the State of Nevada, further exemplifying his commitment to advancing education beyond the confines of the Boardroom.

The title of the Nevada Regents’ Rising Researcher Award will be changed to the Jason Geddes Rising Researcher Award. The move was spearheaded by Regents Joseph C. Arrascada, Byron Brooks, and Stephanie Goodman in recognition of Regent Geddes dedication to mentoring young students and rising researchers across NSHE.

“Former Regent Dr. Jason Geddes was a colleague and friend. Last year, he was awarded the title of Regent Emeritus for his 16 years of service to higher education. This is a fitting tribute to his contributions to higher education in the state of Nevada. Dr. Geddes had a long-standing commitment to higher education and was instrumental in shaping policies that support research and academic excellence. By naming the award after him, we honor his memory and dedication and hopefully encourage others to follow in his footsteps.”

The Regents’ Rising Researcher Award is given annually to up to three NSHE faculty members at each UNLV, UNR, NSU, and DRI in recognition of early-career accomplishments and potential for future advancement and recognition in research.

The recognition reflects the Board’s profound appreciation and gratitude to Regent Geddes for his exceptional leadership and service to NSHE and the state of Nevada. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of students and leaders in the field of higher education.
