Juneteenth and NSHE’s Commitment to Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity

In recognition and celebration of Juneteenth on Saturday, Nevada System of Higher Education Chancellor Melody Rose released the following statement:

“Tomorrow, the nation will honor Juneteenth, which recognizes June 19, 1865, as the date when freedom was finally announced to slaves in Galveston, Texas, nearly two and a half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

As a higher education community, we commit to understanding our nation’s complex history, even as we dedicate ourselves to making a better future.  The founding values of equality, liberty, and justice must extend to all.  Without a full appreciation for the nation’s unequal application of these values, we will never fully achieve them.

Please join me in acknowledging the inequities of our past and embracing our collective responsibility to stand up against injustice and racism wherever it occurs.
