NSHE Celebrates Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Chancellor Melody Rose along with NSHE’s eight institution presidents recognized Indigenous People’s Day on Monday, Oct. 12, 2020.

In a statement celebrating Native Americans, including the Numu (Northern Paiute), Nuwu (Southern Paiute), Newe (Western Shoshone), and the Wašiw (Washoe) peoples, Chancellor Rose said, “Indigenous Peoples’ immeasurable contributions to our society have helped shape our way of life. Through fine art, storytelling, dance, sport, technology, agriculture, education, and many other disciplines and practices, Indigenous Peoples have enhanced our collective knowledge base and encouraged all of us to promote respect and responsibility not only for the Earth but also for our fellow human beings.”

Chancellor Rose said NSHE is committed to meeting the unique needs of indigenous people.

“The preservation and transmission of Indigenous Peoples’ histories, languages, and culture have made NSHE a better and brighter education system, and we commit to meeting the unique needs of Indigenous Peoples in substantial and meaningful ways through the development of programs and support for Indigenous students,” Chancellor Rose said.
