NSHE Statement on SCOTUS LGBTQ Ruling

Monday’s U.S. Supreme Court decision clearly underlines that federal law now protects our LGBTQ students, staff, and faculty’s right to fairness. Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote for the court, “In Title VII, Congress adopted broad language making it illegal for an employer to rely on an employee’s sex when deciding to fire that employee. We do not hesitate to recognize today a necessary consequence of that legislative choice: An employer who fires an individual merely for being gay or transgender defies the law.” The Court confirmed what we already know – that nobody deserves to lose their job on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity. The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) reaffirms our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. These values are at the core of who we are.
