Passing of Former Regent Mark Alden
Former Regent Mark Alden who served the Nevada System of Higher Education from 1995 to 2012, passed away following a lengthy illness.
Regent Alden, a graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno, served the board with honor and distinction. During his 17-year tenure he was also a leader who chaired a number of committees.
“Mark was a selfless advocate for the Nevada System of Higher Education, its eight institutions, and its students,” said Regents Chairman Kevin J. Page. “Mark always was there to help or offer advice or lend an ear as a friend. He was a tremendous leader.
“On behalf of the Board of Regents, Chancellor Thom Reilly, NSHE staff, and our entire system, I want to express our sympathies to Mark’s family,” Page said.
In 2016, Regent Alden was awarded the Distinguished Nevadan Award, the most prestigious award conferred by the Board of Regents. It is bestowed upon prominent individuals who have made significant achievements that have contributed to the cultural, scientific or social advancement of Nevada.
For his lifelong efforts supporting Nevada’s higher education institutions, Regent Alden also received the Outstanding Service Award from the University of Nevada Alumni Association, Outstanding Alumni Award, University of Nevada, Reno, Lifetime Member, UNLV Alumni Association, and President’s Medals from UNLV, DRI, and Nevada State College.
