Four Regents, including three newcomers, were elected to the 13-member Nevada Board of Regents which governs the Nevada System of Higher Education, its eight institutions, and more than 100,000 students.

Incumbent Regent Carol Del Carlo (District 9) will be joined by newcomers Laura Perkins (District 1), Donald McMichael (District 4), and Amy Carvalho (District 12) following Tuesday’s elections.

Elected to serve a six-year term, the 13 Regents set policies and approve budgets for Nevada’s entire public system of higher education, including four community colleges, one state college, two research universities and one research institute.

Board Regents Chair Kevin J. Page welcomed the new regents to the Board.

“I look forward to working with them and hearing their thoughts and ideas on how to improve student success in Nevada higher education,” he said. “We must move forward as one system to create the skilled workforce Nevada needs to continue our state’s economic success.”

There will be a ceremonial swearing in for the four regents at the Jan. 18 meeting.

The eight institutions the regents govern include: The College of Southern Nevada; Desert Research Institute; Great Basin College; Nevada State College; Truckee Meadows Community College; University of Nevada, Las Vegas; University of Nevada, Reno; and Western Nevada College.
