More than 12,000 apply for inaugural Nevada Promise Scholarship
Preliminary data indicates the Nevada Promise Scholarship Program received 12,193 applications from Nevada high school seniors across the state before the application period closed on midnight, Oct. 31.
“I’m thrilled to see such an incredible response to the Nevada Promise Scholarship and the increased access it will provide to so many young Nevadans,” said Dr. Thom Reilly, chancellor of the Nevada System of Higher Education. “The Nevada Legislature’s investment in this program will create an incredible domino effect that will not only improve the lives of these students, but future generations as well.”
Application distribution by each of Nevada’s four community colleges:
- College of Southern Nevada: 9,386
- Great Basin College: 361
- Truckee Meadows Community College: 1,798
- Western Nevada College: 648
Established by the Nevada Legislature earlier this year, the Nevada Promise Scholarship provides last-dollar funding to eligible students. The scholarship will cover the cost of the registration fee and mandatory fees (tuition is not charged to residents of Nevada) not covered by other gift aid. While the scholarship does not cover some smaller fees, the intent of the program is to cover nearly all of the costs of going to a community college in Nevada.
In addition, students will be required to meet with a mentor who will help them on their journey into and through college. Students must also complete 20 hours of community service by the end of April to remain eligible.
