NSHE Supports Community in Wake of Las Vegas Tragedy
Dear NSHE Community,
We are all deeply saddened by the senseless act of violence that occurred Sunday evening. We are grateful to the many first responders, medical personnel, and caring citizens who have stepped up to offer their assistance. Special thanks to the UNLV and Thomas & Mack staff for selflessly working this morning to ensure evacuees felt safe.
The effects of this tragedy are far-reaching and have undoubtedly impacted our students, staff, and faculty. We grieve with the NSHE and greater Las Vegas community over the loss of life. We are aware of students and staff that are currently seeking medical care and we are keeping them in our thoughts, wishing for a speedy recovery.
NSHE campuses stand ready to assist anyone who has the need to contact loved ones, seek counseling, or would like to volunteer. Additionally, NSHE serves as a community resource and we would like to offer our resources and facilities as our city plans to respond to those in need.
We are pleased to announce Governor Sandoval’s authorization for Administrative Leave for any state government employee to leave work to donate blood this week. Please notify your supervisor of your intention to donate blood. Administrative Leave per NAC 284.589 is leave with pay for up to 2 hours.

Counseling Services
- All About You Counseling will be on campus, Tuesday 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and again on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. To schedule a time to talk, please call AAU’s Service Coordinator, Gabby, at (702) 754-0807.
- NSC has partnered with UNLV Student Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) to provide confidential student support services such as individual, couple, and group counseling. Students are encouraged to call the CAPS office at 702-895-3627 to schedule an initial appointment. CAPS is located in the Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC), room 1500, on the UNLV campus. Please clearly identify yourself as a Nevada State College student when contacting CAPS.
- Students and staff can text HOME to 741-741 for immediate support from the Crisis Text Line.

UNLV Candle Vigil – SU Courtyard October 2nd at 7 p.m.
- On the SU Courtyard there will be a UNLV Candle Vigil starting at 7 p.m. tonight on Oct. 2. At 7:08 p.m. there will be a moment of silence, exactly 21 hours after the first shot was fired. There will be speeches from student leaders including UNLV Student Body President Christopher Roys, RHA President Robert Evans as well as any speeches, poetry, and songs from students in Registered Student Organizations.
Counseling Services:
- Drop-in counseling services are available today for students, faculty, and staff until 6 p.m. in the Health Education room of the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. No appointments are necessary.
- The Center for Individual, Couples and Family Counseling exists to serve the campus community and Las Vegas as a whole. They have representatives at casinos at this time, offering their services.
- Student Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is available to any member of the campus community and provides a variety of confidential services, such as individual, couple, and group counseling. Students are encouraged to call the CAPS office to schedule an initial appointment.
- An on-call counselor is available during open hours to see students who have an immediate need and to consult with faculty and staff. - Counseling and support services are available to faculty and staff through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP). - October 2nd, from 1-4 p.m. in SU Ballroom B.
- This processing space is available for those who are looking to connect with other individuals affected by the tragedy. There will be snacks, activities for self-care, and quiet spaces. Please note trained counselors will NOT be on site.
