Regents approve emeritus status for former chancellors and presidents
The Board of Regents today granted emeritus status to seven former presidents and two former chancellors in recognition of their outstanding service to Nevada higher education.
“This is an opportunity to honor the legacy of these leaders who played such a significant role in the history of the Nevada System of Higher Education,” said Kevin J. Page, Board chairman. “Amending our policy to recognize these remarkable individuals and their accomplishments is a fitting tribute.”
The Board awarded emeritus status to the following:
- Dr. Milton D. Glick, President, University of Nevada, Reno (2006-2011) – posthumously
- Dr. Richard Jarvis, Chancellor, Nevada System of Higher Education (1994-1999)
- Dr. Paul Killpatrick, President, Great Basin College (2002-2008)
- Dr. Fred J. Maryanski, President, Nevada State College (2005-2010) – posthumously
- Dr. Richard Moore, President, College of Southern Nevada (1994-2000) and Nevada State College (2000-2002) – posthumously
- Dr. Jane A. Nichols, Chancellor, Nevada System of Higher Education (2000-2004)
- Dr. John Richardson, President, Truckee Meadows Community College (1997-2001)
- Dr. Neal J. Smatresk, President, University of Nevada, Las Vegas (2009-2014)
- Dr. Stephen G. Wells, President, Desert Research Institute (1999-2016)
Board of Regents policy previously required that individuals who retire must have at least five years of service to be eligible for emeritus status. The Board revised that policy today to allow them to grant emeritus to former chancellors and presidents who do not meet the five-year service requirement but are otherwise deserving of such recognition due to extraordinary performance or achievement.
