Regents name Mary Korpi Distinguished Nevadan
The Board of Regents today approved the nomination of Mary Korpi as a 2016 Distinguished Nevadan.
The Distinguished Nevadan represents the most prestigious award conferred by the Board of Regents. It is bestowed upon prominent individuals who have made significant achievements that have contributed to the cultural, scientific or social advancement of Nevada. Korpi, who recently retired after 40 years with Newmont Mining Corp., is one of nine honorees to be recognized as a Distinguished Nevadan in 2016. Her award will be presented at the University of Nevada, Reno winter commencement in December.
Korpi was nominated for the award by Regent Kevin Melcher.
“Mary’s commitment to Elko, her community, and our state, has been outstanding,” said Melcher. “She has been a wonderful mentor and continues to be a respected leader.”
Previous 2016 honorees, who received their awards at spring commencement ceremonies earlier in the year, include: Fred Albrecht (posthumously), Mark Alden, Amy S. Ayoub, Shelley Berkley, Bill D. Brady, Dr. Nicola Michael Spirtos, Justice Cliff Young, and Judge Gregg W. Zive.
