Regents approve tuition and fees increase
Today the Nevada Board of Regents approved a tuition and fees increase of four percent for each of the four upcoming academic years for students at seven Nevada System of Higher Education colleges and universities.
The dollar increase in registration fees will range from a low of $3.50 to a high of $8.50 per credit for each of the four years.
“Increasing the cost of a college education is never an easy decision,” said Dan Klaich, chancellor of the Nevada System of Higher Education. “We have continued to reduce costs, increase efficiencies and explore new revenue options. These increases will help us improve our student services and classroom instruction.”
The tuition and fee recommendations were a direct result of meetings and public forums with students, presidents and campus communities over the past year. The recommendations were discussed over the course of two previous Board of Regent meetings in March and April, with final action taken at today’s meeting.
Currently, the State of Nevada appropriates funds that cover 65.1 percent of the NSHE operating budget. Student fees and tuition make up 34.2 percent.
TERMINOLOGY NOTE: Nevada residents only pay registration fees and are not charged tuition. Non-residents pay registration fees plus tuition.
Undergraduate registration fees at the universities and community colleges (upper and lower) will increase by four percent in each of the next four academic years: 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18, and 2018-19.
In addition, graduate registration fees at the universities will increase by two percent in academic years 2017-18 and 2018-19.
For Nevada State College, undergraduate registration fees will increase by 2.5 percent in academic year 2015-16 and by 3.5 percent in each of the next three academic years.
For non-resident tuition, the existing tuition rate will remain the same at the universities and community colleges in academic years 2015-16 and 2016-17 and will be increasing by two percent in academic years 2017-18 and 2018-19.
For Nevada State College non-resident tuition will increase by four percent in each of the four academic years.
