NSHE Partners with WCSD to Launch Secure Wi-Fi Access Service eduroam for 68,000 Students and Staff Across District

The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) has partnered with the Washoe County School District (WCSD) to bring the secure Wi-Fi access service eduroam to all 120 schools and district sites. With the service now live, more than 68,000 students, teachers, and staff can connect using their school credentials at all WCSD campuses and at tens of thousands of participating locations across Nevada and around the world.

“This strategic partnership with Washoe County School District exemplifies our commitment to eliminating digital barriers and ensuring equitable access to educational resources throughout Nevada,” said Board of Regents Chair Byron Brooks. “By extending eduroam’s secure network to 68,000 students and staff across 120 schools, we are not only enhancing today’s learning environment but also establishing the robust digital infrastructure essential for Nevada’s educational and economic future.”

With the districtwide rollout complete, WCSD joins a growing number of Nevada public entities offering access to eduroam. The service allows students and staff to connect not only at their home campus but also when visiting NSHE institutions and other participating education and community sites statewide and globally. Users log in with their existing school credentials and connect automatically wherever eduroam is available, creating a consistent and secure experience. In Nevada, the service is supported by NSHE’s System Computing Services and offered at no cost through state funding to eligible districts, libraries, museums, municipalities, and other education-serving organizations.

“Expanding eduroam to Washoe County schools shows what’s possible when we work together to close the digital divide,” said NSHE Chancellor Matt McNair. “Reliable internet access should never be a barrier to learning, and this partnership is another step toward ensuring students and educators have the tools they need to succeed, whether they’re in the classroom, at a library, or on a college campus across the globe.”

“This initiative will empower our students, faculty, and staff with reliable internet access beyond our schools, at thousands of educational, research, and municipal institutions worldwide,” said Chris Turner, chief information officer for WCSD. “By joining the eduroam community, we are breaking down connectivity barriers and fostering a truly interconnected learning environment, opening up a world of opportunities for collaboration and exploration. This is more than just Wi-Fi; it’s about enabling access to knowledge and empowering the future of education in our District.”

This launch is part of NSHE’s ongoing effort to expand eduroam access statewide through partnerships with school districts, cities, counties, and more.
