Regents name Distinguished Nevadans, Regents’ Scholars, and Honorary Degree recipients
The Nevada Board of Regents today named recipients of several prestigious honors, including the 2015 Distinguished Nevadans.
2015 Distinguished Nevadans
The Distinguished Nevadan represents the most prestigious award conferred by the Board of Regents. It is bestowed upon prominent individuals who have made significant achievements that have contributed to the cultural, scientific or social advancement of Nevada.

- Mr. Gus “Billy” W. Flangas
- Dr. Hugh S. Collett

In addition, the following awards were announced:
2015 Regents’ Scholars
The Regents’ Scholar Award is bestowed upon one student from each NSHE institution for their academic achievements, leadership ability and service contributions. Each honoree receives a $5,000 stipend. The 2015 honorees are (click to view all Regent Scholar Nominations):

- Mr. Ryan Gerchman, Truckee Meadows Community College
- Ms. Robyn Openshaw, Western Nevada College

- Mr. Kevin O. Tamadonfar, University of Nevada, Las Vegas (undergraduate)
- Mr. Andrew D. Nordin, University of Nevada, Las Vegas (graduate)
- Ms. Ivan Padilla-Rodriguez, University of Nevada, Reno (undergraduate)
- Mr. Augustus Merwin, University of Nevada, Reno (graduate)
2015 Honorary Degrees
The Board of Regents approved the following honorary degree recipients:
- Ms. Diana Bennett, Honorary Doctorate, UNLV
- Mrs. Jennifer and Mr. Phil Satre, Honorary Doctorate, University of Nevada, Reno
- Dr. Hugh S. Collett, Honorary Baccalaureate, Great Basin College
- Mr. Dennis Birr, Honorary Associate, College of Southern Nevada
The Regents’ Award recipients will be honored at their respective campus award ceremonies, while Distinguished Nevadan and Honorary Degree recipients will be honored during commencement ceremonies in May in Elko, Las Vegas, and Reno.
