Four NSHE institutions receive $1.14 million for student retention efforts

This week, the U.S. Department of Education announced that Nevada State College (NSC) will be awarded $220,000 to provide financial aid and other academic support services to students majoring in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

NSC joins three other NSHE institutions who were awarded more than $920,000 in July for our ongoing effort to expand access and success for Nevada students.

NSC’s recent award was part of $23.4 million in Student Support Services grants to more than 100 institutions in 36 states to help college students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds succeed in higher education.

These funds, which Sen. Harry Reid was crucial in securing for Nevada’s public colleges, are awarded to institutions to provide academic support and ensure student success for first generation college students, low-income individuals, as well as those with disabilities.

• The College of Southern Nevada will receive $247,584 to provide academic and other support services to low income, first generation, or disabled students.
• Nevada State College will receive $220,000 to provide financial aid and other academic support services to students majoring in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
• The University of Nevada, Las Vegas will receive $331,629 to help students in the areas of course selection advice, academic progress monitoring, financial literacy counseling, career coaching, and grant aid.
• The University of Nevada, Reno will receive $344,465 to provide academic and other support services to low income, first generation, or disabled students.

Reid. “As someone whose life was transformed by education, I understand how important it is for students to have a chance to get ahead. The programs funded by these grants will play an important role in ensuring Nevada students from all walks of life have a shot at lasting academic and career success.”

These much-needed services will have a positive impact on hundreds of students. Providing critical support services, such as advising, is key to helping our students overcome challenges, set goals, and successfully complete their dream of earning a college degree or certificate.
