Regents Approve International Partnership with Higher Education System in Tamaulipas, Mexico
The Nevada Board of Regents has approved an international partnership by entering into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with higher education systems in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico.
“This strategic partnership will create new educational opportunities, build greater cultural understanding, and academic collaborations with our Tamaulipas colleagues,” said NSHE Chancellor Thom Reilly.
College of Southern Nevada President Federico Zaragoza, Western Nevada College President Vincent Solis and Nevada State President Bart Patterson played key roles in establishing the system-wide international relationship.
Nevada’s One System approach to higher education attracted the Mexican educators because they could negotiate with an entire system of higher education rather than try to deal with individual institutions, according to Solis.
The future working relationship with Tamaulipas will:
- Foster opportunities to establish academic student and personnel exchanges to strengthen and enhance programs of major interest;
- Design dual degree programs that require cross-border participation and study abroad enhancing cultural enrichment for students;
- Offer language courses that will enrich cultural ties between both institutions;
- Initiate collaborative training of faculty and student in bilingual studies, mechatronics, and other disciplines; and
- Organize and collaborate on conferences, symposiums and courses that will benefit both systems.
- Approximately 27 percent of students enrolled at an NSHE institution for fiscal year 2017 identified as Hispanic, and nearly half of all students enrolled in the Clark County School District identified as Hispanic for the school year 2016-17.
As an integrated system NSHE’s institutions, UNLV, University of Nevada, Reno, the College of Southern Nevada; Great Basin College; Nevada State College; Truckee Meadows Community College; Western Nevada College; and Desert Research Institute, can address all higher education needs from community college through doctoral and professional programs.
