Board of Regents Recap Feb. 28-Mar. 1 2019
The Board of Regents met for two busy days on the campus of Nevada State College (Go Scorpions) in Henderson, the second fastest-growing public four-year college in the country. Highlights of the meeting include:
2019 Distinguished Nevadans Announced
NSHE’s most prestigious honor recognizes nine prominent individuals who have made significant contributions to the cultural, economic, scientific or social advancement of Nevada and its people.
This year’s Distinguished Nevadans are former Supreme Court Justice Miriam Shearing and her late husband Dr. Steven P. Shearing, Tony Sanchez III, Dr. George Norman Christensen, Professor Emeritus William A. Douglass, Cliff and Donna Findlay, Governor Robert F. List and Governor Brian Sandoval.
Regents 2019 Scholar Awards
Outstanding students from throughout the state have been recognized for their academic achievements, leadership ability and service contributions to Nevada. They will each receive a $5,000 stipend funded by NSHE administration.
The Regent’s Scholar honorees are Naree Asherian – College of Southern Nevada, Sandra Solis – Great Basin College, Keely Biggs – Nevada State College, Ahtziry Vasquez – Truckee Meadows Community College, Hannah Patenaude – UNLV Honors College, Saruna Ghimire – UNLV doctoral candidate, Hanna Huntley – UNR, Hector Arciniega, UNR Ph.D. student.
These students represent the future of Nevada and we are proud of their many accomplishments in the classroom and in the community.
International Partnership with Higher Education System in Mexico
The Board approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the higher education system in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico. The international partnership is intended to create new educational opportunities, build greater cultural understanding, and academic collaborations.
Mexican educators are attracted to Nevada’s One System approach to higher education because NSHE, as a unified system, can provide a “one-stop shop” for international partners. Our eight institutions can address all higher education needs from community college through doctoral and professional programs.
Regent Patrick Carter pointed out that this initial partnership is a great way to test the waters, as we look forward to working with other countries.
Predictable Pricing Program Approved
With the approval of a Predictable Pricing Program, the Board took an important step that will help the more than 100,000 students who attend NSHE institutions appropriately budget for tuition expenses.
Future registration fees and non-resident tuition for undergraduate and graduate students will be based on the Higher Education Price Index that tracks the inflation college costs on a four-year cycle.
College affordability and price predictability are important factors in providing access to higher education. This program will go a long way in helping students and parents plan for the cost of college.
Transfer and Articulation Improvement Confirmed by Audit
The board is pleased to report that a recent audit of transfer and articulation agreements between our seven degree-granting institutions showed marked improvement. Overall, 76 percent of agreements reviewed resulted in little or no loss of college credits.
Improving the ability of students to move between our colleges and universities has been a focus of the Board, the Chancellor and our institution leaders. We are now seeing positive results from the hard work of a lot of administrators, advisers and faculty.
A significant benefit of NSHE’s One System is that these agreements are designed to create pathways for students to move credits seamlessly between one institution to another.
Sincerely,
Regents Chair Kevin J. Page
and
Regents Vice-Chair Jason Geddes
