NSHE Regents Extend the Contract of UNR President Marc Johnson

The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Board of Regents approved extending the contract of University of Nevada, Reno President Marc Johnson through December 2020.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the delay of the ongoing NSHE Chancellor and UNLV and UNR President searches, the Board of Regents leadership is seeking continuity in these key leadership positions. Earlier this week, the Regents voted to extend the contracts of NSHE Chancellor Thom Reilly and UNLV President Marta Meana to December 2020.

“I want to thank Chancellor Reilly, President Johnson, and President Meana for their willingness to stay on and help our system and institutions navigate through this turbulent and unprecedented time,” said Regents Chair Jason Geddes.

Chancellor Reilly added, “I appreciate the sacrifice President Meana and President Johnson are making to allow for continuity and an easy transition during this disruptive event.”

CURRENT SEARCH SCHEDULE

Under the current schedule, the search for a new Chancellor will take place in June. Once a permanent Chancellor is found, Chancellor Reilly will serve in an advisory role.

The searches for the permanent presidents of UNLV and UNR will take place in September, and will include campus visits, meetings and interviews with the search committee and various university and community stake holders for the finalists.

The UNLV campus visits are now scheduled for August 31 and September 1 and the finalist interviews are set for September 2, with the Regents making their decision on September 3.

The UNR campus visits are now scheduled for September 14 and 15 and the finalist interviews are set for September 16, with the Regents making their decision on September 17.

All searches will be performed following NSHE Code as outlined in Title 2, Chapter 1, Sections 1.5.3 and 1.5.4.

It is inappropriate for the NSHE Board of Regents or Chancellor to comment on any candidate for any of the open searches, at this time.

NSHE System Administration will continue to work collaboratively with the Office of Governor Sisolak and all county, state, and federal health officials regarding COVID-19. The health and well-being of Nevada’s public higher education community continues to be NSHE’s utmost priority in this developing situation.
