Honoring the Legacy of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dear friends and colleagues,
As a nation we continue to struggle with racially motivated hate and institutionalized racism. As academic
leaders, we have a responsibility to stand firmly on the side of justice, peace, and inclusion for all.
Today, as we honor the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., we recognize that the fight for equity is
ongoing. It is hard work. It requires us to acknowledge this tension. As leaders in higher education we will
continue to engage in difficult discussions on our campuses and to confront the deep-rooted racism that
exists in our country and which hurts our communities.
At NSHE, we remain resolute in our commitment to creating equitable, welcoming spaces for all, with the
belief that it is our diversity that makes us stronger, wiser, kinder, and more just. I trust that today’s
students will be the authors of tomorrow’s true justice.
In the words of Rev. King, “True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice.”
