Gateway Mathematics Education
The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) has undertaken comprehensive reform of its gateway mathematics education, beginning with full-scale implementation of corequisite education in 2021. This reform aims to enhance student success, particularly among underrepresented populations, by replacing traditional remedial courses with a corequisite model that allows students to enroll directly in college-level mathematics courses while receiving concurrent, just-in-time support.
As part of a model of continuous improvement, NSHE partnered with the Charles A. Dana Center out of the University of Texas at Austin in 2023 to continue the work of the Corequisite Implementation Task Force. This new task force—featuring representatives of the seven teaching institutions, a liaison from the Nevada Department of Education, and NSHE staff—sought to look at the “Next Steps” for improving corequisite education in Nevada.
The Task Force’s recommendations are contained in the report below, and implementation work will commence during Fall 2025.
