{"id":1912,"date":"2015-10-02T07:57:00","date_gmt":"2015-10-02T07:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/?p=1912"},"modified":"2023-02-24T21:59:36","modified_gmt":"2023-02-24T21:59:36","slug":"chancellors-bulletin-10-02-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/chancellors-bulletin-10-02-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"Chancellor&#8217;s Bulletin: October 2, 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Here are some of the latest events and great things happening at our institutions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Arts<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; Nevada State College, along with Clark County Poet Laureate Bruce Isaacson, last week co-sponsored a poetry reading by the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/06\/10\/books\/juan-felipe-herrera-of-california-to-be-next-poet-laureate.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera<\/a>. The author of 28 books of poetry, novels for young adults and collections for children, Herrera&#8217;s reading at NSC was part of the &#8220;Poets of National Stature&#8221; program.<\/li><li><strong>Faculty&nbsp;<\/strong>&#8211; An original group of faculty and staff who helped establish Truckee Meadows Community College in 1971 have now teamed up to donate more than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmcc.edu\/news\/2015\/09\/steadies-donate-17k-for-scholarship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$17,000 toward a new student scholarship<\/a>. The group includes 12 of the 49 founding staff members who are known as the &#8220;Steadies.&#8221;<\/li><li><strong>Research&nbsp;<\/strong>&#8211; The National Science Foundation recently awarded $3.8 million to a team of UNLV researchers who will lead an international collaboration to advance work on artificial muscles. UNLV engineers&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unlv.edu\/news\/release\/unlv-led-team-awarded-38-million-advance-artificial-muscle-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kwang Kim and Paul Oh<\/a>&nbsp;will team with faculty from Japan and Korea to advance the field of &#8220;soft robotics,&#8221; where the components of the robot are made of pliable materials. In this case the focus is on new polymer-metal composites, an area in which Kim is a pioneering researcher.<\/li><li><strong>Community&nbsp;<\/strong>&#8211; More than 15,000 students at 32 primary Washoe County schools have begun receiving vegetables produced by the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unr.edu\/nevada-today\/news\/2015\/desert-farming-initiative-brings-fresh-veggies-to-school\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Nevada, Reno&#8217;s Desert Farming Initiative<\/a>&nbsp;and Lattin Farms as part of the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program. The program&#8217;s aim is to expose children to a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables in the hope that they will develop healthy eating habits.<\/li><li><strong>Upcoming Event<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; &nbsp;Tomorrow is the big football game between UNLV and UNR. Once again, the fate of the Fremont Cannon is up for grabs.
