This statewide earthquake drill is part of a broader international effort to promote earthquake readiness and safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Participating Institutions:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>University of Nevada, Reno<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>University of Nevada, Las Vegas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nevada State University<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>College of Southern Nevada<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Great Basin College<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Truckee Meadows Community College<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Western Nevada College<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Desert Research Institute<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nevada is the third most seismically active state in the United States, making earthquake preparedness crucial for the safety of all NSHE students, faculty, and staff. The ShakeOut drill provides an essential opportunity to practice life-saving actions in the event of an earthquake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What to Expect During the Drill: <\/strong>At exactly <strong>10:15 AM<\/strong> on October 15, NSHE colleges and universities will broadcast an earthquake alert through their campus-wide emergency communication systems. All participants will be instructed to immediately &#8220;Drop, Cover, and Hold On.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to Participate:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>DROP <\/strong>to the ground<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>COVER <\/strong>your head and neck (and get under a sturdy desk or table if possible)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>HOLD ON<\/strong> until the shaking stops<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>ADAPT if needed:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\ud83e\uddaf With a cane: Drop or sit on a chair or bed, cover your head, keep your cane nearby<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u267f In a wheelchair: Lock your wheels, bend forward, and cover your head and neck<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\ud83d\udeaa No cover available: Move next to an interior wall, crouch down, and protect your head and neck<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to Get Ready<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Make a Plan:<\/strong> Know evacuation routes, assembly points, and how you will reconnect with family and friends. Secure heavy furniture and items that could fall.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Build a Kit:<\/strong> Stock up on essential items to get by for a few days on your own (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ready.gov\/kit\">Ready.gov kit guide<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stay Informed:<\/strong> Update your personal contact information in Workday, PeopleSoft, or Canvas.
