Carvalho<\/strong>. \u201cHer dedication to education, her kindness, and her leadership have left a lasting mark on our state. She inspired so many through her actions, and we are grateful to have had the opportunity to honor her memory together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Tarkanian\u2019s career in education began as a classroom teacher before she advanced to roles as a speech pathologist, principal, and university instructor. She was a pioneer in creating opportunities for students with disabilities, founding innovative inclusion programs to support their success. Her belief in the transformative power of education was a constant throughout her life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her connection to Nevada began in 1973 when she and her family moved to Las Vegas. Her late husband, Jerry Tarkanian, was the legendary head basketball coach at UNLV, a role that established the family\u2019s lasting legacy in the state. Yet, Dr. Tarkanian\u2019s influence extended far beyond her family\u2019s ties to athletics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTaking a moment to reflect on Dr. Tarkanian\u2019s contributions was both emotional and uplifting,\u201d said <strong>Vice Chair Jeffrey Downs<\/strong>. \u201cIt reminded us of her incredible ability to bring people together for a greater purpose. Her legacy will continue to guide and inspire us as we work to build on the foundations she helped create.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020, Dr. Tarkanian was elected to the NSHE Board of Regents, where she brought a wealth of experience and a deep passion for higher education. Her thoughtful leadership and commitment to students enriched Nevada\u2019s higher education institutions and the broader community.
