Helens served as President of GBC from 2017 to 2024, leading the institution through a period of growth, collaboration, and resilience. During her tenure, Helens spearheaded initiatives that strengthened GBC\u2019s reputation and expanded its impact across rural Nevada, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Establishing the Mining Center of Excellence to support workforce development in Nevada\u2019s mining industry.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Securing funding for the Winnemucca campus addition in partnership with the William N. Pennington Foundation and the University of Nevada, Reno, earning the Cashman Good Government Award for NSHE.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Overseeing the renovation and expansion of the Welding Technology Lab, creating new opportunities for students and the local economy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promoting collaboration within NSHE, including shared services initiatives with UNR and Truckee Meadows Community College to enhance operational efficiency.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supporting students\u2019 academic success, culminating in her 2024 receipt of the Phi Theta Kappa International Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPresident Helens dedicated her career to serving the citizens of rural Nevada, tirelessly working to build healthy, vibrant communities and empowering individuals to achieve the&nbsp; American Dream. Her unwavering commitment to fostering educational opportunities and improving the lives of rural Nevadans makes her truly deserving of this recognition,\u201d said <strong>Governor Joe Lombardo<\/strong> in a letter of recommendation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPresident Helens was instrumental in shaping Great Basin College into a stronger institution for the students and communities of rural Nevada,\u201d said <strong>Board of Regents Chair Amy J.
