{"id":1580,"date":"2011-09-09T15:10:00","date_gmt":"2011-09-09T15:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/?post_type=nshe_news&#038;p=1580"},"modified":"2022-07-25T22:31:25","modified_gmt":"2022-07-25T22:31:25","slug":"regents-approve-distinguished-nevadan-award-for-richard-bryan","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/news\/2011\/09\/regents-approve-distinguished-nevadan-award-for-richard-bryan\/","title":{"rendered":"Regents approve Distinguished Nevadan award for Richard Bryan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Board of Regents today approved the nomination of Richard Bryan as a Distinguished Nevadan, the highest honor awarded by the Nevada System of Higher Education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Distinguished Nevadan is bestowed upon prominent individuals who have made significant achievements that have contributed to the cultural, scientific or social advancement of Nevada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A native Nevadan, Senator Bryan began his legal career in 1964 as a Deputy District Attorney in Clark County (Las Vegas), Nevada. Two years later, he was named Clark County&#8217;s first Public Defender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1968, Richard Bryan was elected to the Nevada State Assembly. He was re-elected to the State Assembly in 1970. In 1972, he was elected to the State Senate and re-elected in 1976.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The former prosecutor won his first statewide election as Nevada&#8217;s Attorney General where he played a major role in successfully defending Nevada&#8217;s gaming regulatory structure in the Federal Courts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1982, he was elected to the first of two terms as Nevada&#8217;s governor. Under his leadership, economic diversification and the attraction of new businesses to Nevada became a priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1988, Bryan was elected to the first of two terms in the U.S. Senate.
