{"id":1520,"date":"2015-08-19T04:56:00","date_gmt":"2015-08-19T04:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/?post_type=nshe_news&#038;p=1520"},"modified":"2022-07-25T22:31:08","modified_gmt":"2022-07-25T22:31:08","slug":"four-nshe-institutions-receive-1-14-million-for-student-retention-efforts","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/news\/2015\/08\/four-nshe-institutions-receive-1-14-million-for-student-retention-efforts\/","title":{"rendered":"Four NSHE institutions receive $1.14 million for student retention efforts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This week, the U.S. Department of Education announced that Nevada State College (NSC) will be awarded $220,000 to provide financial aid and other academic support services to students majoring in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NSC joins three other NSHE institutions who were awarded more than $920,000 in July for our ongoing effort to expand access and success for Nevada students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NSC&#8217;s recent award was part of $23.4 million in Student Support Services grants to more than 100 institutions in 36 states to help college students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds succeed in higher education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These funds, which Sen. Harry Reid was crucial in securing for Nevada&#8217;s public colleges, are awarded to institutions to provide academic support and ensure student success for first generation college students, low-income individuals, as well as those with disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The <strong>College of Southern Nevada<\/strong> will receive $247,584 to provide academic and other support services to low income, first generation, or disabled students.<\/li><li><strong>Nevada State College<\/strong> will receive $220,000 to provide financial aid and other academic support services to students majoring in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).<\/li><li>The <strong>University of Nevada, Las Vegas<\/strong> will receive $331,629 to help students in the areas of course selection advice, academic progress monitoring, financial literacy counseling, career coaching, and grant aid.<\/li><li>The <strong>University of Nevada, Reno<\/strong> will receive $344,465 to provide academic and other support services to low income, first generation, or disabled students.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Everyone deserves a fair shot and the opportunity to succeed, and education is the key to that opportunity,&#8221; said Sen. Reid. &#8220;As someone whose life was transformed by education, I understand how important it is for students to have a chance to get ahead. The programs funded by these grants will play an important role in ensuring Nevada students from all walks of life have a shot at lasting academic and career success.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These much-needed services will have a positive impact on hundreds of students.
