{"id":1436,"date":"2018-08-02T14:57:00","date_gmt":"2018-08-02T14:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/?post_type=nshe_news&#038;p=1436"},"modified":"2023-02-21T17:21:25","modified_gmt":"2023-02-21T17:21:25","slug":"nevada-promise-scholarship-now-accepting-applications","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/news\/2018\/08\/nevada-promise-scholarship-now-accepting-applications\/","title":{"rendered":"Nevada Promise Scholarship Now Accepting Applications"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The&nbsp;Nevada Promise Scholarship,&nbsp;which allows students to attend Nevada community colleges at virtually no cost,&nbsp;began accepting applications for its second year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year saw more&nbsp;than 1,300 students&nbsp;become eligible to receive the scholarship and&nbsp;attend&nbsp;the College of Southern Nevada, Great Basin College, Truckee Meadows Community&nbsp;College,&nbsp;or&nbsp;Western Nevada College&nbsp;this fall&nbsp;semester&nbsp;nearly for free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Established by&nbsp;Governor Sandoval and the Nevada Legislature in 2017&nbsp;and&nbsp;distributed through Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE)&nbsp;institutions,&nbsp;the scholarship&nbsp;covers any remaining mandatory tuition\/registration fees after all other forms of aid are applied.&nbsp;The scholarship is available to any Nevada student graduating from high school or completing a high school equivalency in the 2018-19 school year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be eligible, a student must complete the application <strong>by Oct. 31<\/strong>, attend two training sessions, meet with an assigned mentor, complete 20 hours of community service, complete all financial aid required documentation, including the FAFSA&nbsp;(Free Application for Federal Student Aid), and register for at least 12 credits for the fall 2019 semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThanks to the&nbsp;Nevada Promise Scholarship&nbsp;the&nbsp;cost of going to college is no longer a barrier&nbsp;for Nevada students,\u201d&nbsp;Chancellor&nbsp;Thom Reilly said. \u201cLast year we saw&nbsp;more than 10 percent of the initial applicants&nbsp;make it through the process.&nbsp; And we hope to see that number grow&nbsp;this&nbsp;year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A priority&nbsp;of&nbsp;the Board of Regents is seeing increased student access to higher education,&nbsp;said&nbsp;Chair Kevin J. Page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to make college accessible for Nevada students who could not see a pathway to higher education,\u201d Page said. \u201cThe state&#8217;s economic success is dependent on increased participation in post-secondary education and closing the achievement gap among the underserved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Board of Regents&nbsp;in June&nbsp;approved a&nbsp;$3 million&nbsp;budget request from the&nbsp;state&nbsp;legislature&nbsp;to cover the cost of&nbsp;the&nbsp;Nevada Promise&nbsp;Scholarship over the next two fiscal years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Promise Scholarship is just the latest&nbsp;way the state legislature and NSHE are&nbsp;working to increase&nbsp;access to&nbsp;higher education for Nevada students,&nbsp;including through the Guinn Millennium Scholarship, the Silver State Opportunity Grant, and&nbsp;campus-based&nbsp;access funds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":1228,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false},"categories":[40,6],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1436","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-40","category-press-release"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/1436","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/news"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1436"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/1228"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1436"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1436"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1436"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
