{"id":1401,"date":"2019-04-14T23:15:00","date_gmt":"2019-04-14T23:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/?post_type=nshe_news&#038;p=1401"},"modified":"2023-02-21T17:20:59","modified_gmt":"2023-02-21T17:20:59","slug":"nshe-summit-closing-the-achievement-gap","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/news\/2019\/04\/nshe-summit-closing-the-achievement-gap\/","title":{"rendered":"NSHE Summit: Closing the Achievement Gap"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Nevada\u2019s public higher education leaders gathered to discuss what\u2019s being done to close the achievement gap among underserved and critical populations at a special Board of Regents meeting April 12, 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNSHE is a majority-minority system based on enrollment and the success of ethnic minorities is a key priority,\u201d said Chancellor Thom Reilly, who has made closing the achievement gap a top strategic goal for NSHE and its eight institutions. \u201cWe are striving to increase the graduation rates for critical populations in higher education, particularly for black and Hispanic student populations. The success of this goal is a building block toward the success of our community and our state.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an unprecedented effort the Board of Regents and NSHE institutions <a href=\"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/file\/BoardOfRegents\/Agendas\/2019\/04-apr-mtgs\/bor-refs\/BOR-4.pdf\">discussed<\/a> enrollment and student success data by race\/ethnic categories for each NSHE institution including, graduation rates, awards conferred, transfer outcomes and persistence rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also heard from national leaders about <a href=\"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/file\/BoardOfRegents\/Agendas\/2019\/04-apr-mtgs\/bor-refs\/BOR-5.pdf\">best practices and what NSHE can do<\/a> to improve student success for minority and underrepresented student populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regents Chair Kevin J. Page added, \u201cThe Board of Regents recognizes the importance of increasing graduation rates of minority students in our community.
