{"id":1313,"date":"2020-07-13T09:41:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-13T09:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/?post_type=nshe_news&#038;p=1313"},"modified":"2023-02-21T17:19:33","modified_gmt":"2023-02-21T17:19:33","slug":"nshe-seeks-withdrawal-of-ice-rule-changes-for-international-students","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/news\/2020\/07\/nshe-seeks-withdrawal-of-ice-rule-changes-for-international-students\/","title":{"rendered":"NSHE Seeks Withdrawal of ICE Rule Changes for International Students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Chancellor Thom Reilly has asked Nevada\u2019s Federal Delegation to help rescind the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) rule changes for international students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/7.8.20_DelegationLetter_ICErestrictions_InternationalStudents.pdf\">In a letter to Nevada&#8217;s Congressional representatives, the Chancellor stated,<\/a> \u201cThese changes could adversely affect over 2,000 international students attending NSHE\u2019s institutions. Firstly, NSHE anticipates offering both in-person and on-line classes for the upcoming fall semester, which could cause ICE to revoke or not approve visas for our international students.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ICE <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ice.gov\/news\/releases\/sevp-modifies-temporary-exemptions-nonimmigrant-students-taking-online-courses-during\">rule change<\/a> for international students was announced last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlthough our institutions are working to process the ramifications of these regulations for their specific institution, we do know broadly that international students contribute $41B to the US economy; US universities and research programs depend on revenue from international students to survive; US universities may be compelled to prematurely open in?person instruction causing a higher risk of virus transmission, and STEM companies thrive and depend on global talent widely (D.V., 2020),\u201d the letter stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NSHE recognizes the valuable cultural and intellectual contributions the more than 2,000 international students make to Nevada\u2019s eight public higher education institutions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":26,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false},"categories":[34,6],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1313","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-34","category-press-release"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/1313","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/news"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1313"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/26"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1313"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1313"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nshe.nevada.edu\/system-administration\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1313"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
